Many of you have seen the signs at the 2016 Democratic Convention “Stop TPP”

What is the TPP and Why do we need to Stop TPP?

The Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) is presented as a trade agreement involving 12 nations [United States, Canada, Mexico, Peru, Chile, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore, Brunei, Vietnam, Australia and New Zealand].  According to Pres. Obama the TPP is the most “progressive trade deal” in history – with strong consumer, labor and environmental protections built in;  however, when the public finally saw the details of the deal, Public Citizen, a nonprofit advocacy group  stated:

“The text shows that the TPP would offshore more American jobs, lower our wages, flood us with unsafe imported food and expose our laws to attack in foreign tribunals.”

Below is a transcript from Democracy Now where Dr. Cornel West explains in much clearer terms than I could as to why Hillary is not an ethical choice:

Cornel West: Why I Endorse Green Party’s Jill Stein Over “Neoliberal Disaster” Hillary Clinton

“Hillary Clinton is a neoliberal disaster… one who generates a mass incarceration regime, who deregulates banks and markets, who promotes chaos of regime change in Libya, supports military coups in Honduras, undermines some of the magnificent efforts in Haiti of working people, and so forth. That’s the record of Hillary Clinton…”

Indian Rapper Turns Nicki Minaj Hit Into a Powerful Corporate Slam

The verdant hills, forests and lakes of Kodaikanal — a popular tourist destination in South India — hides a toxic secret.  Unsafe practices of handling and disposing hazardous material at Unilever’s thermometer factory has contaminated the region and exposed hundreds of workers to toxic mercury.  Once released into the environment, mercury can cause various symptoms, among them:  ‘birth defects, memory loss, organ failures [kidney, liver, reproductive, etc.]’.

Claiming that “There were no adverse effects on the health of the employees or the environment“, Unilever continues to deny responsibility for illnesses suffered by the ex-workers and their families, many of whom died or became physically handicapped as a result of mercury poisoning.

In response to a diary, I was asked “What will a President Bernie do that President Obama hasn’t done and by extension, what a President Hillary wouldn’t do?” Fair question and I decided that the topic was worth a diary of its own.

Introduction — the working poor.
The video of Mary Poppins asking for a living wage perfectly illustrates the plight of today’s workers. Whether it’s at Amazon or Target, the culture of overwork + wage erosion increases income inequality to levels not seen since the era just before the Great Depression. Read the rest of this entry »

“You can have your own opinions, just not your own facts”

There is so much misinformation on TV that most of us rarely get factual information [esp. in context] — as can be seen from a post I had written a while ago:   Al jazeera English News vs. US Corporate Media Infotainment.  Consequently, if one doesn’t watch TV, it simply means that one is unburdened by the “negative knowledge” that many others carry. Here is an interesting summary of the 2015 GOP candidates (dubbed clown car) and their message of “Fear and Loathing” of the ‘other’.  To sum up their message is: “We hate the Mexicans (immigrants), Muslims, Gays, etc… they’re all coming to rape / kill us or in the case of homosexuals maybe force us to marry them?… If by any chance though you are a woman who is raped and now pregnant, you are duty bound to carry the pregnancy to term, because the GOP is “Pro Life” (in other words anti choice for women) and will defund Planned Parenthood even though Planned Parenthood already cannot use federal funds to cover abortions. Recently, I saw Respect: A Musical Journey of Women where excerpts of 60 songs, from “I Will Follow Him” to “These Boots are Made for Walking”  were sung by a cast of four women accompanied by a live band. The show chronicles the progress of women through the 20th century, against the backdrop of songs of each era.

While it is easy to celebrate women’s milestones– “We’ve come a long way baby”, we cannot ignore that in many ways progress has been stymied.  Promoting women as sex objects continues today — witness Britney Spears, the modern day Betty Boop / Marilyn Monroe. Today’s laws are a rollback on women’s protection —  from the numerous anti-choice regulations designed to prevent women from getting birth control pills or abortions to budget cuts  for programs assisting domestic violence / rape survivors.

If you’ve ever wondered what could happen to Disney Princesses in today’s world, the two videos below are worth a peek:

After Ever After – DISNEY Parody — Jon Cozart, a.k.a. “Paint,” has uploaded a song called “After Ever After” where four Disney princesses are singing about their lives in the modern world — Ariel is swimming in pollution – Thanks to BP,  Jasmine’s Aladdin was taken by the CIA – My husband’s a mark for the War on Terror, Belle might go to jail on charges of bestiality and Pocahontas died of STDs – More English, French, and Spaniards came to greet us with guns and germs and steel…
